description: Zero-click search and AI answers are eroding attribution. Why mid-sized teams feel it most, and how rehearsing a campaign before spend gives you a comparison the dashboard can't.

Somewhere in the last twelve months, your numbers stopped adding up. The campaign report says one thing. The CRM says another. Finance asks what the paid budget actually produced, and you give an answer with the word "roughly" in it, twice.

You've probably been treating that as a tooling problem. Arguing for a better attribution model, cleaner UTMs, or one more integration.

It isn't a tooling problem. The thing you're trying to measure has changed shape.

## The trail went cold before the click

We all know how attribution works. Every attribution model you've ever used- first-touch, last-touch, multi-touch- assumes the trail exists and you can see most of it.

In 2026, a growing share of the trail happens somewhere you can't see. A buyer reads an AI Overview instead of visiting your page. They ask a chatbot to compare three vendors and the chatbot does the comparison. By the time they show up in your analytics, they've already done the research that used to generate six trackable touches.

Marketers have noticed. In a 2026 survey of 101 marketing professionals, half of them at companies with 11 to 200 employees, **53% said AI and zero-click search have reduced their confidence in their attribution data**, and 37% named AI search as one of the hardest channels to measure. When asked for their single biggest attribution obstacle, nobody could agree. AI and zero-click behavior tied with disconnected sales and marketing data at 17%, offline interactions came in at 16%, and the sheer number of touchpoints at 14%.

No single cause above 17%. That's the tell. It isn't one broken thing. It's the model of a buyer leaving a clean trail that no longer holds.

## Why it lands hardest on a mid-sized team

If you ran a forty-person marketing department, you'd have someone whose whole job was stitching this together. Mid-sized teams don't. More than half of mid-market companies have ten or fewer people in marketing, according to a 2025 study of 1,205 marketers at companies with 10 to 499 employees.

And the ask is going up, not down. **Measuring ROI is the single most anticipated 2026 challenge for US marketers**, named by 40.8% in HubSpot's survey of 1,505 marketing professionals. Budget is flat: marketing spend grew 1.7% over the past year, the smallest increase since 2021, in the Spring 2026 CMO Survey of 308 US marketing leaders.

So the picture is: fewer trackable touches, the same small team, and a CFO who wants a tighter number than last year. You can see why "roughly" keeps showing up.

## The part nobody says out loud

Here's what's uncomfortable. Attribution was never a measurement of what caused the sale. It was a measurement of what you could see, with credit assigned by a rule you picked.

That worked well enough when you could see most of the journey. It works badly when a growing share of the journey has moved to places that don't send you a referrer. You can keep refining the rule. The rule is dividing up a smaller and smaller piece of the truth.

The 2026 survey found 87% of marketers now account for untrackable influence somehow: an estimate from indirect metrics, a formal process, a conversation in the planning meeting, or just asking customers how they heard about you. Which is to say, most of us have already quietly admitted the dashboard isn't the whole story.

## Measuring earlier instead of measuring more

If measuring after the fact keeps getting harder, the obvious question is whether you can learn more before the fact.

That's the idea behind Mimic. Mimic simulates entire marketing campaign outcomes. Mimic builds a population of simulated people from the same Google and Meta audience definitions you already buy, loads your actual flight, every creative and channel in the order you plan to run them, and simulates how that population responds. You get CTR, clicks, conversions and ROAS per channel, and what each creative contributed in the position it ran, before a dollar goes out.

It doesn't replace attribution. It gives you something attribution can't: a comparison. Run the flight. Swap the second ad. Run it again. The difference between the two results is the one thing a zero-click buyer can't hide from you, because it happened in a rehearsal, not in the wild.

## What a rehearsal can't tell you

I'll be plain about the limits, because the whole point of this post is that overconfident numbers are the problem.

Read Mimic’s output as a structured way to compare plans, not as an exact measurement. Each run uses one audience and splits budget across the channels you select based on your input. Two runs with the same inputs land close, not identical, because a simulated crowd has some of the randomness a real one does.

That's a different kind of honesty than a dashboard that reports 2.4x ROAS to one decimal place while missing the part of the journey it can't see.

## Try it on the campaign you're about to launch

You have a flight planned. Load it into Mimic, run it, then change one thing you've been arguing about, the opener, the channel mix, the offer, and run it again. See what moved.

That won't fix your attribution. It will mean you walk into the next budget conversation with a reason for the plan, instead of a number with "roughly" in front of it.

The first week is free. After that it's $50 a month, and you can cancel anytime.
